At Worksop Priory Academy we aim to deliver a programme of scientific enquiry that is accessible to all children and gives them the skills they need for successful academic achievement.
We intend to deliver a science curriculum which gives children the subject knowledge that they need, whilst encouraging them to learn through discovery and practical activities.
Through high-quality science lessons, we strive to ensure that vocabulary and scientific concepts are placed into children’s long-term memory. This ensures that such concepts are built upon each year to ensure that children leave our school with a good, well-rounded knowledge of science so that they are ready to confidently access the next stage of their learning.
Our science programme of study covers concepts of being scientific, life, energy and matter. Each concept is planned so that smaller blocks of learning within each concept are built upon in successive years.
We also cover wider concepts as part of our programme of study, where children consider ethical aspects of science, learn about (and from) great inventors and scientists, whilst also considering the sustainability of the earth's eco-systems as a result of scientific advancement.
We aim to have a curriculum which allows children to complete both written and practical tasks. We follow the Hamilton scheme which covers the full range of learning prescribed in the National Curriculum. Each year, children are exposed to new areas of study, whilst also re-visiting and deepening their knowledge on previous learning.
We aspire for our children to be independent and hardworking, which is why independent investigation is at the heart of our science curriculum. However, we also know that it is important for children to be given certain knowledge before they investigate for themselves; this knowledge comes from quality first teaching and can be measured by whether children know the ‘strapline’ of their investigation or not. This approach ensures our children are learning the intended knowledge and meet the intended outcome.
At Worksop Priory Academy, children are regularly given the opportunity to self-assess their findings and share them with their peers. This gives them a sense of achievement and shows their understanding of the knowledge that they have learnt.
We provide opportunities for children to have enrichment days for science, especially during British science week - to enhance their learning further.
Dream by: exploring different scientific concepts.
Build by: developing our knowledge and scientific vocabulary through an investigative approach.
Grow by: building upon and sharing our knowledge with others.
